What is the computers “Registry” and will it harm the computer if it’s cleaned?

Question by Eatmie: What is the computers “Registry” and will it harm the computer if it’s cleaned?
I have McAfee for computer security; under the “Quick Clean” I leave off checking the “Registry Cleaner” because I’m not certain if it will harm my computer. What is your computers registry, and if it’s cleaned what happens when it is “CLEANED”?

Cleaning your registry is fine, it basically gets rid of all the commands that are no longer used, for example it may be written in the registry to do various things with MSN messenger that you never ever use and never will, it will remove the command line which is often written by programs you will never use, cleaning it out creates a clearer view for you pc……

Imagine a book written in english and spanish mixed up together and then you remove the spanish and the things you dont need it becomes easier fo you to read, in this case your cpu.

Thanks Mike
