Nagra III, IV, IV-s, IS and SN reel to reels

Swiss made to the highest standard, these recorders are the best ever made portable reel to reels for their build quality and sound though they do not share the amount of functions the competitors machines had to offer like the Sony APR-2003 and the UHER 4000, 4200 and 4400 did but none of these machines had the syncropulse pilot time system.

  1. Nagra are BEAUTIFUL MACHINES!!!!……my grandfather had one,he was a shortwave radio operator. He went nuts and gave it to some guy passing by on the street. SERIOUSLY.

  2. I need stereo, personally I have become enamoured by MD Recorders, which work nice with simple stereo mikes and are pretty discrete at concerts. I have no experience with new solid state (digital whatever?) recorders. I bet they are just as good. But I need CD or near to it quality. I hate DAT!

  3. the rolls royce of reel to reel sadly i never find one to a low price at a flea market i continue to dream

  4. You can find a fully-functional Nagra 4.2 reel to reel full track mono recorder on e-bay for 450$!.

  5. Cheers! the recorders are expensive but worth the money, the IV-S I use but not all that often, I am hoping to buy a SNST soon too.

  6. Very nice video explaining these high end professional machines. I have always wondered about them. I see them on E-Bay, and they usually go for high bids! Now I know why! Thanks for the fine video, very well filmed, very well explained.

  7. Thanks for posting this. I have always been curious about the workings of these machines. A few years ago, I saw a documentary about the audio archiving department of the US Library Of Congress. They use these machines for playback of very old tapes because they say they are very gentle with tape.

  8. Hello there.

Great video, very informative. I have just purchased a nice nagra Iv-s tc and love it to bits. A really nice piece of engineering. I would like to trace a suitable service manual, but so far have had no look with an emails to Nagra GB. Any ideas? A am looking specificaly for the audio calibration information, so any pointers yo umay have would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

    Simon

  9. Hi, I think the only thing you can do is sand away the damage, or replace the battery bay, other than that, I dont know.

  10. I have a Nagra which I purchased, at an auction years ago, for £25. Unfortunately, when I got it home I realised that batteries had run inside !!!!
    Is this correctable ?
I remember working on a production,a while ago, when a Nagra was dropped into the sea (salty water). The Nagra was swiftly immersed in fresh water for a few hours and then blow dried with a hair drier!!! As New !!
I recall the same happening with a Fostex DAT…………………F****d !
    Say no more

  11. Nagra ! .. for me ,the best porta-taperecorder – ever .
